Terry's Bru

Evaluations Page

Bru first came to my attention when it was distributed on a RH CD. It worked and I've used it occassionally. Usually when I had no other backup system running and I felt I needed a backup just in case something did go wrong.

In my opinion, Bru provide a basic gui interface on the core essential backup operations, but once you want to move beyond that, you run into major problems of editing some quite curly scripts.

I've never gotten enthusiastic enough to buy the BRU boxed set for the simple reason of it being too darned hard to fix. BRU occassionally suffers from incompatibility problems and getting assistance is hard and rare, unless you are paying for it. Okay, that sounds find, but understanding BRU and working out its problem has always been a major work and there were easier ways.

Frankly, I'd much rather wrestle with find, compress and cpio than fix problems under BRU. That to me is BRU's problem. If someone has written a script that does exactly what you want and it works on your system, then you are fine. If it doesn't, then good luck.

That said, my attitude is that if BRU works for you, then use it. However, I can not recommend it as a network backup application. It is however worth knowing how to use as it can usually be pressed into quick service to ensure that a backup is taken when other methods are unavailable.
